Typically Spanish town located just off the bustling town of Torrevieja has one of the best beaches on the coast. La Mata has gained its popularity due to salt mining.
History of salt mining in La Mata goes back to Roman times when salt was highly valued commodity, and even used as currency. According to historians, salt mining revenues to support financially the expedition of Christopher Columbus. Currently
salt lake is part of a protected Natural Park (Parque Natural de la Mata y Torrevieja) creates a refuge for many species of birds.
Fiestas in La Mata - celebrates the Feast of the Virgen del Carmen in July and the Virgen del Rosario in October.
La Mata has a large selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
